Special Order Service is a term in the Retail Industry to describe the practice of offering non-stocked products. OpenReference typically classifies these processes as Make-to-Order.

Special Order Service requires the retailer to offer a catalog of products managed as 'Special Order'. These products require the customer to place an order, typically in-store. The store places a Purchase Order on the vendor or an internal order on a warehouse in the retailer's supply chain. This PO is linked to the order placed by the customer. The delivery to the customer may bypass the store to reduce order cycle time and costs.
