Demurrage is a fee assessed by a terminal owner on cargo where waiting or storage times exceeded the contractually agreed demurrage-free time. Examples include:

  • Rail cars in rail yards
  • Containers at sea port terminals
  • Airfreight containers at airport terminals

Demurrage rates and conditions are typically specified in transportation contracts.
