SOLAS or Safety of Life at Sea Convention is a international treaty concerning the safety of merchant ships, published by the IMO (International Maritime Organization, a United Nations agency) and followed by shipping nations.

The main objective of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standards for the construction, equipment and operation of ships, compatible with their safety.

The​ current SOLAS Convention (the original plus its amendments) consists of 15 articles.

  • Chapter XI - Special measures to enhance maritime safety
  • Chapter XII - Additional safety measures for bulk carriers over 150 meters in length
  • Chapter XIII - Verification of compliance (Mandatory IMO member state audit scheme)
  • Chapter XIV - Safety measures for ships operating in polar waters
