The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies books and book-like products published internationally.

The ISBN consists of the original 10 digits preceeded by the EAN country code for the country 'Bookland' (country code 978). Bookland is an imaginary place created to reserve an EAN country code for books, regardless of country of origin, so that the EAN space can catalog books by ISBN rather than maintaining a redundant parallel numbering system.
