The International Article Number (EAN) is a 13-digit barcode standard for marking and identifying sellable products. Each EAN uniquely identifies the product, manufacturer, and its attributes; the EAN is typically printed on a product label or packaging as a barcode.

EAN-8 is the short form of EAN-13. This code is only used if the article is too small for an EAN-13 code.

Compare to: GTIN, UPC. EAN is a superset of the UPC (Universal Product Code). A UPC formed in the United States can be transformed into an EAN by prefixing it with a zero.

Notes

The original full name of EAN is European Article Number.
