Roll-On, Roll-Off

Roll-On, Roll-Off is a term describing a vessel (ship) or train designed to carry cargo on wheels (cars, trucks, trailers, rail cars).

  • RORO vessels have a ramp to allow the cargo to efficiently roll on and roll off. Examples include: Ferries, cargo ships and barges. The term RORO vessel is generally reserved for ocean vessels.
  • RORO trains require purpose-built terminals to facilitate the loading/unloading of the cargo vehicles. Alternative names for RORO rail systems include: Piggybacking, Rolling Highway, Rolling Road, Trailer on Flat Car.
