Total Equipment Efficiency Performance (OEE) measures the ability to efficiently utilize production equipment (or assets). It measures how much of the time your manufacturing asset is running at full capacity and output good products.

Calculation

Total Equipment Efficiency Performance
=Overall Equipment Efficiency × Capacity Utilization × m:AE33
where:
  • Overall Equipment Efficiency = The percentage of time the equipment is ready and able to run, excluding planned and unplanned downtime.
  • Capacity Utilization = The percentage of time the equipment is running at its maximum speed, without minor stops or slow cycles.
  • m:AE33 = The percentage of good parts produced, excluding defects or rework.
Unit of Measure: %

Importance

An Total Equipment Efficiency Performance approaching 100% means that the equipment is always available and running (~100% Equipment Availability) and running at maximum speed with no minor stops or slow cycles (~100% Equipment Performance) and product is made with no defects or rework (~100% Produced Quality).

Notes

In most industries:

  • 85% or more is considered world class
  • 60% is typical performance
  • 40% is considered lagging, but not uncommon for manufacturers new to OEE.
